Zusammenfassung

On the river with his fly rod or in the woods with his rifle, award-winning poet Todd Davis shares his observations on life, death, and the natural world-and how these things have given shape to his relationships with his father and sons.

As a hunter and an angler, Davis reflects on the cycles of life and death that we as humans can never truly extract ourselves from, embracing both the complicated joy of the hunt and the gravity of taking another life. It is this relationship with the wildness in nature that has also shaped his relationships with his father and his sons, giving these generations of men a place to know and express love, connection, reverence, and grace. Set on his home mountain in Appalachia, with selected stories traveling to the wilderness of the mountain west, this collection asks what we might give back to the world that sustains us.

Todd Davis's essays on hunting, foraging, and fishing have appeared widely in such magazines as The Sun, Gray's Sporting Journal, Anglers Journal, The FlyFish Journal, and Northern Woodlands. He's the author of eight full-length collections of poetry, most recently, Ditch Memory: New & Selected Poems and Coffin Honey. He edited the nonfiction collection, Fast Break to Line Break: Poets on the Art of Basketball, and co-edited the anthologies A Literary Field Guide to Northern Appalachia and Making Poems: Forty Poems with Commentary by the Poets. His writing has won the Midwest Book Award, the Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Prize, the Chautauqua Editors Prize, the Bloomsburg University Book Prize, and the Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Silver and Bronze Awards. He is an emeritus fellow of the Black Earth Institute and teaches environmental studies, creative writing, and American literature at Pennsylvania State University's Altoona College.
