Isfjord Radio station was built and put into action in 1933. This book is an attempt
to summarize the available data and pictures regarding boats and ships that had
significance for the Isfjord Radio station, either directly or indirectly. As a coastal
radio station, Isfjord Radio maintained contact with both mainland Norway and all
ship traffic in the North Atlantic, as well as locally around Svalbard. Boats became
central to the station in many aspects of its life and duty.
This book aims to gather information about the ships and boats that have been
significant to the staff and visitors of Isfjord Radio. In the numerous boats and ships
associated with various activities around the station, Longyearbyen, the Russian
settlements, and the region, Isfjord Radio is to some extent part of the history of
These Areas. This book, of course, is not comprehensive in all aspects, but it
attempts to cover as much as possible based on literature, official, and private photo
collections.
