The 15 papers and 14 abstracts in this volume summarize all current research on the Miramichi's aquatic ecosystem exchanged between scientists and the public at a 1994 workshop. They examine the physical environment, the biological environment and historical background of research on the Miramichi River and its estuary, which is home to 47 species of fish and an important over-wintering area. Human impacts, which affect the estuary most, include heavy metal pollution and pesticides, the effect of dredging, annual release of contaminants from pulp mills, and sewage on the human edibility of aquatic animals in the Miramichi ecosystem. A Subject Index and Species Index are included.
