George Zidane wrote this book in 1911, for the purpose of teaching Islamic history at the Egyptian University at that time. The book discusses the situation that Egypt was in at the time of the Ottoman conquest. The book addresses the origin and emergence of the Ottoman Empire and its connection to Egyptian history. It also studies the period of Selim I's rule as the Ottoman Sultan who conquered Egypt. Throughout this book, Zidane was keen to balance the public and the private. In his book, he linked the general Ottoman era represented by the Islamic Caliphate, and the Ottoman era in Egypt as one of the historical stages that Egypt's general history passed through. The historical study in this book was not limited to the political aspect, but rather extended to include the social, economic, financial and cultural aspects.
