A novel of four college friends called to the war on the Western Front in 1917. In this historical setting, author Sidney Little provides an epic view of history as America enters the First World War.
This is the human story of the men and cannons of the 149th Field Artillery and the horsepower used to move the wagons, caissons, and guns into position to fire upon the enemy.
Though the characters are fictitious all of the battles are based on actual events. The action follows the Rainbow (42nd) Division from its inception in the States and its progress from New York to the battlefields of France. The story recounts the important battles they fought from the Champagne to the Ourcq River, to St. Thierry, to St. Mihiel, to the Meuse-Argonne, and finally to the armistice of 1918.
This story also includes the introduction of the airplane as an instrument of war following the action of the Kicking Mule (95th Aero) Squadron.
