Sometimes routine wasn't always routine, as Sheriff JD Pickens and his deputies learned. What was supposed to be a routine 911 call ended up costing Sheriff JD Pickens a deputy and turned out to be a double homicide, one that was outside the realm of humanity. Forced to divide his team into two units and call for help from two retired homicide detectives, Pickens worried that he'd be unable to solve both crimes. Especially since during his investigation, he wound up getting shot ended up in the hospital where he had to lead his team of deputies from his bed. And, he had to do it without his wife, Dr. Marge Davids, the county medical examiner, knowing he was doing it. The investigations took a number of twists and turns until Pickens, and his investigative teams were finally able to uncover who the perpetrators were. But knowing who they were wasn't enough. Pickens would have to work with other law enforcement investigators from several counties if he wanted to capture and apprehend the perpetrators. The result was that Pickens had to take a back seat to those law enforcement agencies and let them make the apprehensions. In doing so, two serial killers were arrested and brought to justice in another county. Ultimately, the killers of Pickens' deputy were brought to justice in Pickens' county. Not since a psychopath went on the warpath with a shotgun had there been such bloodshed in the county, leaving scars that would last a long time.
