Zusammenfassung
Days to Remember: The British Empire in the Great War (Illustrated) presents a panoramic literary commemoration of imperial participation in World War I, blending historical narrative, patriotic reflection, and documentary vividness. Its range moves from battlefield episodes and naval engagements to home-front endurance and colonial contribution, framed by illustrations that deepen its memorial force. Standout accounts of sacrifice, courage, and collective resolve situate the volume within the wartime and postwar tradition of imperial remembrance. John Buchan and Henry Newbolt bring to the work the authority of writers deeply engaged with public history, national service, and the shaping of British wartime memory. Buchan's narrative energy and political-historical awareness meet Newbolt's poetic sense of duty, discipline, and civic inheritance. Together, they align the volume with early twentieth-century imperial culture, while also revealing the vast network of peoples, regions, and institutions mobilized by the conflict. This book is recommended for readers seeking a richly contextualized entry into how the Great War was understood, narrated, and commemorated across the British Empire. It offers a valuable opportunity to encounter multiple theatres, voices, and ideals within a single illustrated volume, fostering reflection on memory, identity, and the costs of global war. This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience. - A succinct Introduction situates the work's timeless appeal and themes. - The Synopsis outlines the central plot, highlighting key developments without spoiling critical twists. - A detailed Historical Context immerses you in the era's events and influences that shaped the writing. - A thorough Analysis dissects symbols, motifs, and character arcs to unearth underlying meanings. - Reflection questions prompt you to engage personally with the work's messages, connecting them to modern life. - Hand-picked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance. - Interactive footnotes clarify unusual references, historical allusions, and archaic phrases for an effortless, more informed read.

"It is never easy to fix upon one cause as the origin of a great war, and the war of 1914 was the outcome of several causes combined. For twenty years there had been growing up in Europe a sense of insecurity; the great Powers had become restless and suspicious of one another . . ." (Excerpt)
The British Army during World War I fought the largest and most costly war in its long history. Unlike the French and German Armies, its units were made up exclusively of volunteers-as opposed to conscripts-at the beginning of the conflict. Furthermore, the British Army was considerably smaller than its French and German counterparts. Yet the army showed exemplary valour and courage on the battlefield. Buchan and Newbolt bring their expert analysis into their overview of the Great War and the reasons for it.
John Buchan (1875-1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian and also served as Canada's Governor General. With the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan worked as a correspondent in France for The Times.
Sir Henry John Newbolt (1862-1938) was an English poet, novelist and historian. He also had a very powerful role as a government adviser. He is perhaps best remembered for his poems "Vitaï Lampada" and "Drake's Drum".
